This summer was one of the hottest I’ve ever experienced. I went on vacation to a gorgeous Hainan Island, located in China, and the climate there is tropical. This means hot, very hot! And humid as well that made me carefully consider each makeup and skincare product I was taking with me. And that has definitely determined my summer favorites this time.
The very first favorite of mine is Kiehl’s Micro-Blur Skin Perfector ($35.00). I knew that the climate on Hainan won’t be forgiving yet I didn’t want to overwhelm my skin with heavy-duty silicone-based primers. At the same time I expected my base to keep my t-zone as oil-free as possible. Kiel’s did it all and I will definitely keep relying on this amazing base from now on. It can be used alone or under makeup and in each case it significantly helps with oil control and prolongs the wear-time of makeup. It also helps to visibly minimize any pores and evens out the skin texture. Love it!
The Body Shop Honey Bronze Bronzing Powder ($20.00) in the shade 01 Light Matte was my go-to bronzer and contour powder for the beginning of the summer. I already posted a full review on this bronzer a year ago and had it re-dicovered when I was packing my makeup for holidays. It has a very nice finely milled and smooth texture that glides on the skin easily and blends beautifully. What I especially love about it is the fact that it is matte that makes it an option for contouring on the go when you do not want to pack all your makeup with you. I believe, this is one of the best bronzing powders on the market.
In summer I do not reach for my foundations that often yet I still need a bit of a coverage from time to time. My favorite way to get that coverage is using a concealer with very liquidy and bendable formula. My choice for this summer is the Sephora Collection Bright Future Gel Serum Concealer ($14.00) that comes in a huge variety of shades! Mine is a European version and I have it in the three following shades – 06 Light Beige, 22 Natural and 29 Pink Beige – I have been reaching for one or another depending on how tan I have become. In all cases it has helped me to cover dark circles, minor imperfection and redness. It has a very nice creamy consistency that spreads easily and can be sheered out to almost light coverage if desired while initially it has a full coverage. When set with powder this concealer stays in place for the whole day even in hot and humid weather.
When it is that hot outside I prefer to use long-wearing and waterproof formulas for my eye makeup. My most favorite mascara this summer is the Clinique Lash Powder Mascara Long-Wearing Formula ($17.50) in Black Onyx. It is not the blackest mascara ever but it stays put no matter what! And compared to waterproof formulas it is easy to remove with micellar water. I especially love it for my lower lashes that usually tend to have mascara transfer to the under-eye. Make Up For Ever has recently replaced their Aqua Eyes range with Aqua Eyes XL, yet their web-site still features the original formula. I personally loved the Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes Waterproof Eyeliner Pencils ($21.00) and my summer hit was the 8L Silver that looks gorgeous on the eyes when the skin is tan and stays on my waterline for hours with no smearing or smudging. And it does not make my eyes water that is a huge plus as I have sensitive eyes and I wear contacts.
In summer I naturally prefer light-weight and moisturizing products for my lips. Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector ($25.00) in 02 Apricot Shimmer was my got-to lip item during the whole vacation! I loved this peachy-pink shade that goes well with everything. It stays glossy and hydrating for hours and looks totally gorgeous in direct sun light! You can read my full review on it here. Initially I was a bit skeptical about the highly raved about Clinique Cheek Pop Blushes ($23.00) but I have to say that these blushes are the best! I have mine in 01 Ginger Pop and I can’t stop myself from reaching for it every single time I do my makeup! It is easy to apply, easy to blend and looks so luminous on the cheeks and is extremely flattering on both lighter and deeper skin tones. Totally gorgeous!
And finally, there is the most recent makeup discovery of mine that made it to my favorites almost instantly! Kiko Milano Cream Crush Lasting Colour Eyeshadow ($14.00) in Pearly Lilac is a beautiful light lilac shade with a ton of golden, silver and pink shimmer that stays put on the lids once you apply it and is very easy to work with. I love the shade so much – it can easily be worn on it’s own or as an eyeshadow base to intensify the shadow color. It is currently on sale on Kiko website and I do recommend checking it out!
