Maybelline has released a new set of their famous and popular Color Tattoo Eyeshadows – the new ones are described as creamy mattes. I was extremely excited to get to try these as I am a big fan of the original formula (with the exception for just a few shades). I have been testing two new shades out for quite some time now and have a profound review here for you.
Maybelline New York Color Tattoo Creamy Mattes ($6.99) – innovative pigment technology for a super-saturated colour, now in a matte finish. Smooth cream-gel formula. Up to 24hr staying power.
I genuinely love eyeshadow bases and I really like the idea of using a colored creamy eyeshadows as a base for all other eyeshadows I put over it. I used to use MAC Paint Pots for this purpose and they always worked fine. Although I have already found my holy grail eyeshadow base (Nars Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base) – I still like to use colored bases from time to time – either on their own or together with the NARS base for complete smudge-proofness.
The first shade I tried was Maybelline Color Tattoo Creamy Mattes in Creme De Nude. It is a standard Maybelline Color Tattoo eyeshadow size and the pot looks exactly the same. Inside you find the creamy eyeshadow with a completely matte finish. The shade of Creme De Nude is not as nude as it says. I would describe it as a light lemony shade with distinctive warm undertones that would look nude only on those with very yellow undertones to their skin. It is officially advised to be used ‘alone for sultry matte look or underneath shimmer shades as a primer‘. Creme De Nude feels very creamy to touch but goes on uneven and patchy on the lid – no matter how you apply it – with a brush or with your fingers. It feels drying on the skin and looks dry in real life. I would strongly advise avoiding this particular shade as it is neither good as an eyeshadow nor as a primer.
Notwithstanding the fact that I was highly disappointed with the Creme De Nude shade I still decided to give the Creme De Rose a try. And I am so glad I did! It turned out to be absolutely amazing and is now my favorite option for colored eyeshadow base. Creme De Rose is a whitened medium dark mauve pink shade with neutral undertones and an almost complete matte finish with very sparse and almost invisible gold shimmer particles. It is very creamy and is easy to apply both with a brush and fingers. It works wonders as an eyeshadow base and allows my eyeshadows to stay put for ages. Moreover, I really enjoying using it on its own when I do not have time to do full face of makeup. It is a gorgeous shade that instantly makes you look fresher and makes it appear as if you’ve put a ton of work into your eye look. This is my new must have.
On the swatch above you can see the two shades compared. The Creme De Nude is visibly drier and patchier compared to creamy Creme De Rose that goes on even and opaque. If I were you I would definitely skip the Creme De Nude and go for the Creme De Rose regardless of your skin undertones. Creme De Rose looks good on everyone and is an amazing creamy matte eyeshadow for the price your pay. I have already made quite a dent in my Creme De Rose pot and will definitely repurchase it whenever I run out of it.
