Question of the Day: What do you prefer using – cream or powder highlighters?

Highlighting, strobing and contouring have been in focus of the makeup society for quite some time now that allows us to have a huge variety of products for these purposes. There are creams, powders, liquids, cream to powders – basically anything you might wish for. And I wonder what do you prefer using for your highlight?

Even though there are a lot of liquid highlighters available on the market, these are more of a multi-purpose product and are usually get mixed with foundation rather being used alone as a usual highlighter. Cream and powder highlighters are more or less common and are quite easy to use in comparison with the liquids.

I believe that I own more powder highlighters than cream ones because these are more available and practically every brand has a powder highlighter nowadays. But the recent cream contouring and strobing trend has made makeup producers release more cream products for these purposes and we currently have a very good choice of cream highlighters as well.

My preference of highlighters depends a lot on what foundation I use. If I go for a powder foundation I won’t be using a cream product over it in order not to make it patchy and not to move it. I’d rather use it beneath and top it with powder that prolongs the wear. But you can easily use a cream highlighter with any liquid or cream foundation, with tinted moisturiser or on bare skin. Or you can even use both types of highlighters at once – you just apply the cream highlighter and use you powder highlighter over it to intensify the color and the highlight.

As for powder highlighters, my all time favorites are The balm Mary-Lou Manizer The Luminizer Highlighter, MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Lightscapade and Essence UrbaNICEd Street Style Highlighter in The Happy Direction. Among the cream highlighters, I really prefer using the Nars The Multiple in Luxor or CopacabanaSmashbox L.A. Kights Blendable Lip & Cheek Color in Hollywood & Highlight or The Body Shop Honey Bronze Highlighting Dome in shade 01.

What do you prefer using as your highlighter? Creams or powders? Or may be combining both? Or neither? Share your answers in the comments down below – I would really love to know!

Thank you very much for your attention.

Have an amazing day!

Hugs and kisses,

Dorothea

  1. Lovely post! My favourite highlighter of all time is the Becca Shimmering Perfecter in Moonstone – I love powder because i’m very oily! Her shade is the only one that shows on my pale skin too!

  2. I prefer the creamy ones. I have tried essence and smashbox from your photo and they really give a more natural finish. I also have a couple of powder ones, but I find that they can clog the pores easily if you build them up for a more dramatic effect. 😉
