A huge hype for eyeshadow palettes has finally reached the most luxurious and high-end brands. Early this year Yves Saint Laurent has presented their two new eyeshadow palettes with ten shadows ranging from mattes to satin to shimmers and metallics. As the Nu palette seemed to be the most dupable I decided to go with the more unique Tuxedo one.
Yves Saint Laurent Couture Variation Palette ($95.00) is a 10-Color Expert Eye Palette available in two signature Nude and Tuxedo collections. These palettes were directly inspired by the fabrics of Yves Saint Laurent’s creative studio in Paris. From pale to deep and matte to shimmery, create infinite signature YSL looks.
The packaging of each palette is definitely very sleek, luxurious and eye-catching. The plastic black case features YSL brand logo on gold background. Inside you will find a full-sized mirror and dual-ended expert applicator.
The mirror is very useful especially on the go and you can also get use out of the brush as well if you do not have anything else to use at the moment. It is dual-ended as advertised and on one side there is a flat small lid shadow brush whereas the other end has the fluffier crease/blending brush.
All of the eyeshadows from left to right as presented in the palette: matte cream–white, satin light muted blue, matte dark asphalt grey, metallic dark gray-ish blue with subtle shimmer, light bronzed taupe with metallic finish, darkened shimmery plum, matte deep darkened fuchsia, shimmery light navy blue, medium grey with chunks of glitter, gray-ish black with matte finish.
The majority of eyeshadows perform pretty well with the shadow with the logo (second to right) being too glittery and showing lack of pigment. It only performs well when applied wet yet glitter particles migrate all over the face. All of the eyeshadows are very gentle, soft and as a result powdery. Having good payoff they produce quite a lot of fall-out that is generally not a big deal for me as I do the eye-makeup first but could be a problem for those who prefer to apply foundation first. Other than that eyeshadows are pretty good – soft and bendable, and stay put for the whole day if applied over the base (I prefer the Nars Smudge Proof Base).
You can definitely create quite a lot of different eye looks with this palette and I have several looks to show you:
For this look I used the light bronzed taupe shade to define the crease, then I applied the matte darkened fuchsia shade all over the lid and darkened the corner with the shimmery plum. All of the shades blended nicely with the bronzed taupe being my absolute favorite. I also used the matte black shadow as an eyeliner. This look is very appropriate both for day-time and for a date. It is very gentle, romantic and feminine.
Of course, I could not ignore the classics and I decided to do the very classical smokey eyes that palette is pacifically designed for. I applied the matte creamy white shade all over the lid and under the brow bone. Then I used both light blue shade with satin finish and dark asphalt gray to define the crease. And I also layered the matte black shade on the outer corner of the eye to create the smokey effect. To make the look more dramatic I used the black eyeliner to draw a wing that starts right from the center of the eye. Due to how pigmented the matte white shade is this makeup look looks very fresh and makes the eyes wider and more alluring. I also decided to add a bit of the bronzed taupe on the lower lash line to complete the look and balance out the black liner.
And finally, what a couture palette without a couture look? Inspired with the Victoria Beckham’s eye makeup looks I decided to create a very dark smokey eyes with a blue pop of color. I used the glittery dark grey applied wet on the eye lid with the crease defined with the matte dark grey shade combined with the light satin blue. I highlighter the brow bone with matte white and used a very thick black eye liner to draw a very dramatic liner with a short wing. I also lined the lower lash line with the shimmery navy blue shade to add a pop of color and make the eye color stand out. It is definitely one of my favorite looks with this palette as it looks very sophisticated and couture-like.
Overall, I find this palette unique in terms of shades it offers. Though some shades does not perform their best it is still possible to make them work and to create gorgeous looks as a result. The number of looks you can create is limited with your own imagination and I see myself reaching for this palette when I feel like doing an interesting eye makeup look with the pop a color. Though there are a lot of palettes on the market nowadays this 10 color-palette definitely differs from the rest as it has quite unusual shades and some really good mattes in it. If you like the colors – you should definitely check this out!
